Alcohol

You may have a drinking problem if

  • you feel you need to drink alcohol to relax or feel better

  • you lie about your drinking and/or tell stories to justify it

  • you often drink more than you had planned to

  • you feel shame and/or guilt about your drinking

  • you have friends or family worried about your drinking

  • you forget what you did when you were drinking

Alcohol Abuse  |  Alcoholism

Substance abuse experts make a distinction between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.  Alcohol abusers may have some ability, often with help, to moderate or better control their drinking.  Alcoholics, however, will generally benefit from an abstinence-based approach.

Treatment (individual counselling)

  • assessment re: the severity of one's alcohol problem

  • enhance / create motivation to change

  • create and achieve recovery goals

  • aftercare / relapse prevention

Recovery goals will be discussed so as to moderate your alcohol intake or achieve abstinence, based on the severity of your problem.
