What is a Problem Gambling ?
A problem gambler is a person who spends time and money on gambling which affects them and often others close to them in negative ways.
Progression of Problem Gambling
Winning Phase
The gambling dependence begins with the winning phase. The
gambler sees the wins and not the losses, and gains "internal escape". This causes the bahavior to continue.
Losing Phase
The gambling progresses. Losses and stress increase and habit starts to spiral out of control. The phase can for months or years. The gambler survies by borrowing, repaying and juggling.
Treatment (individual counselling)
-
Assessment re: the severity of ones problem
-
enhance / create motivation to change
-
create and achieve recovery goals
-
after care / relapse prevention
Desperation Phase
This is the final phase. There is extreme emotional and often physical distress as well as severe family and finalcial problems. Legal and often criminal problems are common. The gambler feels overwhelmed and may give up attempts to change or maintain normal responsibilities.
Change
It is very important to note that most problem gamblers can change and recover from any stage of the progression if they are sufficiently motivated and utilize effective recovery tools.
